Some publications charge to print death notices (exceptions such as production errors will not incur charges). There is an additional $5 charge to run a death notice if they are sent via email. No limit is placed on the number of days a death notice can print. Additionally, funeral homes may add their logo to a death notice for an additional charge.
Information typically included: Name, date of birth, date of death, location of death (place, city and state), residence and former residence, cause of death (optional), service information (visitation, wake, memorial service, prayer service, clergy) memorial information, military honors and funeral home name. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we also print “Masks are required (or suggested),” walk-through visitations and “A live stream of the service will be available on (funeral home’s, church’s) website.” *Each publication sets its own death notice guidelines. Therefore, this information is subject to change.*
Information typically not included: Survivors, funeral home websites, pictures, information regarding hobbies, etc.
All private party obituaries must provide us with the name of the funeral home handling the arrangements. The name of the funeral home does not have to appear in the notice but you must follow up to confirm that services are being handled/person is deceased.
In Forum Communications Company newspapers, obituaries up to 10 inches (about 160-200 words) for infants under the age of 1 are free. Additionally, obituaries are free for military members killed in active duty.
In many publications, a submitter can run the same obituary in print for the same publication a second time for 50 percent off. The obituary must be the same length as the original submission. Additionally, the obituary must run within two weeks (for weekly papers) or seven days (for daily papers) to be eligible for the discount. Use the discount code 2DAY at checkout.
Forum Communications Company employees receive a 50 percent discount on obits (obituaries that qualify for the discount are as follows - parents, grandparents, spouses, children, siblings, step-children, step-parents, brother/sister-in-law, daughter/son-in-law, grandchildren, grandparents of current spouse). Other publications may offer a similar discount. Contact Modulist to find out.
Retired Forum Communications Company employees receive a 50 percent discount. Former FCC employees who quit or were fired do not receive a discount.
